Check out "Change of Plans", part 3 of our dual sport experience web series "Gone Fishing".
Phone calls, meetings, training courses, working lunches: we have all done all of them. After a long and crazy function week, sometimes an adventure is needed. The word Adventure has various meanings. One that I like in particular is: "participation in exciting undertakings. " Fishing and riding is an adventure. Sometimes the exciting undertaking doesn’t go since planned. This episode of Long gone Fishing was supposed to be about fishing.
All of us just wanted to get out and go fishing at a local lake. Eric our fishing guru couldn’t make this trip, but I wanted to try out the Eagle Claw Pack It retractable rod and reel combo We picked up at a big box store for $20. I grabbed a few supplies out of my tackle container and threw them into a little box, packed up some bait, and loaded everything, including our DSLR with two lenses into my backpack.
Our route was a basic one. About 20 miles through my house is a great outdoor combo: Saguaro Lake and The Rolls OHV Region. Both are accessed via an easy, 45 MPH limit, scenic road. Our goal was to access the lake via the Rolls. There are many designated two track and jeep roads that lead to coves where you can get away, fish, and swim. I hadn’t been on the trails in this area of the Rolls for a long time. Most of the trails and jeep roads are unmaintained, rugged and rutted. However , some of the trails are fun flowing two track that are a blast to ride. We took one of the jeep roads that brought out to an outcropping with coves on both sides and a 15-20 feet drop at the end. You could fish off the end and both sides of the outcropping. We thought it was an excellent spot.

Perfect drop off to fish from, so we thought.

Coves on both sides of the point made for a cool area. Zoom in close and you can see the campers on the beach in the cove.

All of us arrived a little later in the morning that we wanted, but Travis and I unpacked our portable fishing gear plus started casting off the big fall off. We tried different baits, various hook depths, Bobbers, lures, and various spots on each side: Just about all with no luck. We were not helped by the fact that shortly after we began, the traffic on the lake began to pick up and ski boats were coming in near where we were fishing. One ski boat stopped so they could swim over to where we were fishing and started jumping from the big drop off. I thought about doing the same as it looked like fun. So , instead of getting frustrated and irritated about the lack of fishing, we made a decision it was time to go and we would turn our fishing trip right into a trail riding session and move hit some of our favorite trails at the Rolls.

Eagle Claw compact combo worked decent and was easy to package. The Spiderman box held several hooks and everything else went into the zip lock bag.

We packed up our fishing gear plus headed out. The Rolls is really a fun place to ride. It is a occupied OHV area, but a fun a single. It was a gorgeous day, and we were enjoying the trails so much, we all only stopped for a few pictures.

Trying out an alternative spot. No luck.

The angling didn’t work out as planned; nevertheless , we participated in an exciting executing. We had a great time riding the rugged trails, sand washes, and moving two track. On the way back, all of us stopped at our favorite post trip Mexican food joint, Senor Taco, and got our "Catch of the Day, " some really good beer battered fish tacos.

After the ski boat within the background showed up, it was time to switch the fishing trip into a path ride.

Our goal is to trip, fish, and have an adventure because friends, then share that journey with you. Even though we are 0 to get 3 on catching fish, we have been 3 for 3 on the fun factor. These first three activities have just been warm up rides. Keep on the particular lookout, as more riding, fishing, and hopefully catching are to come through amazing areas in the Southwest.

No solution necessary. Great day for a track ride.

Principles and lessons Learned:
- Fishing on a natural spring where there are a lot of recreational watercraft zipping around doesn’t work too easily.
- The inexpensive collapsible fishing pole has more performance that I have required skills for fishing.
- "There’s a reason it’s called fishing, and just not catching. "
- I was able to fit the very compact rod/reel combo into my day pack without issues, along with my second standard gear.
- A fantastic ride always helps to clear to get from a long week at work.
- Fish Tacos are always the best substitution for the real thing.

Once ride at the Rolls, this is a mandatory post ride stop.
